仮定法のIf節はWithout（～がなかったら）で置き換えることができる。
If Ms.Kim’s had not adviced, the sales team would not have reached its goal last year.
↓
Without Ms.Kim’s advice, the sales team would not have reached its goal last year.
(キムさんの助言なしには、販売チームは昨年目標に到達していなかっただろう。）
「If s had p.p., S would have p.p.」の後半部分が変わらず、If節をwithoutで置き換えられる。
この例は仮定法過去完了を置き換えるパターン。
